Cst. Joseph Allan Martin rescued a suicidal man from a burning house in Prince Edward Island's Kings County on February 20, 1989. Responding to a call from the woman of the house, who had taken shelter next door after having been threatened at knife-point by the man, Cst. Martin arrived on the scene to discover that the distraught man had set the house afire. After several attempts, the constable was able to crawl through the house, locate the source of the fire and extinguish the flames. With the help of his partner outside, he located the arsonist and began pulling him from the house. Forced to retreat yet once again because of the concentration of smoke, Cst. Martin then re-entered a fifth and final time and forcibly dragged the suicidal man to safety and into the custody of the waiting police.
