On February 20, 1990, 11-year-old Sébastien Messier pulled a classmate from the Mille-Îles River, near the Îles Corbeil bridge, in Saint-Eustache, Quebec. The young girl was walking on the river when the ice gave way. Alerted to the cries of the victim and her friends, Sébastien ran to the riverbank, immediately venturing onto the ice. About three metres from the victim, he heard the ice crack. He then crawled over to the young girl, reached out, pulled her from the water and brought her to the riverside where an adult took charge.
