On July 15, 1994, Private Skilliter risked his life to ensure the safety of his troop sergeant while on observation duty at Visoko in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Pinned down in the tent area by fire from a local bunker, the two men were unable to reach their armoured vehicles near the rest of the patrol unit. Directed to advise the driver of the nearest UN vehicle to put on its lights to become more visible, Private Skilliter fired warning shots at the belligerents. Return fire increased and he then moved into the open and fired a long burst into the bunker. Firing stopped and Private Skilliter and his sergeant were able to reach the safety of their armoured vehicles.
