On June 20, 1994, near Wood Buffalo National Park, Alberta, Mr. Nygaard saved the life of his co- worker who was being mauled by a bear. Airlifted into the area to fight a forest fire, the two men had to camp out overnight. Early in the morning, Mr. Nygaard awoke to find a large black bear preparing to attack his colleague. While the latter yelled for help and struggled to escape, the bear bit him several times and grasped him with its claws. Mr. Nygaard grabbed an axe and swung at the animal. Partially disabled, the bear released its grip and went off into the bush. While watching for its return, Mr. Nygaard performed first aid, radioed for help and prepared a landing pad for the airlift out of the area.
