On December 3, 2011, RCMP corporals Peter King and Guy Johnson and Constable Ron Lyver saved the life of a colleague who had been shot on duty in Breton, Alberta. The Emergency Response Team (ERT) was deployed to a remote rural area in search of an active shooter. The ERT positioned itself around a mobile home when the suspect suddenly shot and immobilized one of the team members. As Cpl Johnson provided cover, Cpl King and Cst Lyver ran to assist the victim while the assailant fired upon them, wounding Cpl King twice. Cst Lyver returned fire, providing corporals King and Johnson sufficient time to move their injured colleague to a safe location. Though wounded, Cpl King provided first aid to the victim, while Cst Lyver continued to provide cover fire. After a 12-hour standoff, the suspect finally surrendered.
