Edwin Bourget is driven by a love of knowledge. A senior researcher in biology and marine ecology at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique in Rimouski and at Université Laval, he has conducted groundbreaking research on the environmental adaptation and dispersion of marine invertebrate populations. Later in his career, as vice-rector of research at the Université de Sherbrooke and Université Laval, he advocated for cross-discipline research and the breaking down of silos, working to strengthen partnerships between academia and industry.

Mohamed Ravalia is a local hero in Twillingate. A physician, he came to rural Newfoundland 30 years ago to fill a locum and never left. His passion for rural medicine has benefited local residents who value his patient-centred approach. He has inspired medical students to practice in this area and then remain in the province. Highly regarded for speaking out for better medical services in remote areas, he has helped patients, doctors, administrators and governments work together to improve the health care system.

For nearly 50 years, Madeleine Delaney-LeBlanc has been advocating for women’s rights. She played a key role in seeing gender equality entrenched in the Canadian Constitution. As founding chair of New Brunswick’s Advisory Council on the Status of Women, she has devoted herself to improving the status of women in terms of equality, financial autonomy and social respect. Condemning violence against women, she helped to establish shelters for victims. This champion of social justice continues to volunteer with numerous groups in her community.
