Smith’s loyalist heritage dating to Andrew Smith, who settled in Sunbury County, New Brunswick in 1783. The open book symbolizes the life of scholarship and teachings which Fr. Smith practises as a professor at St. Thomas University, Fredericton. The cross is a reference to his profession as a priest of the Roman Catholic Church, and the Christian and loyalist heritage of his family. |

Smith’s father, Beaver Dam, New Brunswick. The mullet refers to his mother, Aline Clement, a descendent of an Acadian expelled from Nova Scotia in 1756. The purple lilac is the state flower of New Hampshire, from whence Fr. Smith’s loyalist ancestor, Andrew Smith, immigrated to Canada. |
