Dating back to at least the 15th century, these arms are those of Boulton of Moulton, England, from whom Mr. Boulton descends. The bird-bolt, a blunt arrow used for hunting birds, makes a pun on the surname.

The bolt and the tun, a type of barrel, form the original crest of Boulton of Moulton, and they create a rebus of the surname. The griffin was added at the time of the grant in 1974 at the suggestion of Mr. Boulton’s son, D’Arcy Jonathan Dacre Boulton, based on a tale the latter had written.
