The muskrat is the prey traditionally hunted by both sides of Commissioner Kisoun’s family. His mother, being Vuntut Gwitch’in, grew up hunting it in Old Crow Flats, Yukon, and his father, being Inuvialuit, grew up hunting it in the Mackenzie Delta, Northwest Territories. It also recalls the Muskrat Jamboree, an annual festival which Commissioner Kisoun has helped to organize. The event takes place in his home community of Inuvik, Northwest Territories. It is an opportunity for friends and family to celebrate the arrival of spring together by engaging in traditional activities such as drum and old-time fiddle dancing, dog team racing and harpoon throwing. The muskrat thus symbolizes joyful gatherings.
