The following comments are hypotheses only. These Arms are based on those of the chief of the Scottish Clan Hamilton, who holds the titles of Duke of Hamilton and Earl of Arran. The three white five-petalled flowers on a red background are taken from the arms of the Dukes of Hamilton, while a black ship on a white background is used by the Earls of Arran. The maple leaf denotes that Lieutenant-Colonel Hamilton is Canadian. The three horizontal bars possibly allude to the rank insignia of a lieutenant-colonel. |
