The ermine spots evoke the fur trade, alluding to Dr. Marchand’s name, which is French for “merchant,” and to his family, which settled in Canada during the era of New France. They also refer to the entrepreneurial nature of members of his family. The number of spots symbolizes the eight Beatitudes from the teachings of Jesus, values that Dr. Marchand holds dear. |
