The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. Black three-masted ships on a white background are commonly found in the arms of persons bearing the name Meares. The design is likely a canting one, assuming that Meares is perhaps linked to the Old English word mere, meaning “sea.”
