Arms of Cameron Xavier PintoBlazonAzure a tiger passant guardant proper, on a chief engrailed Argent three escallops Gules; SymbolismBlue, a colour associated with the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, refers to Mr. Pinto’s career as an artillery officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, as well as that of his great-grandfather in the Royal Canadian Artillery. The tiger and the arches represent Mr. Pinto’s paternal Indian heritage. The arches allude to the Milagres Church in Mangaluru, India, a reference to Mr. Pinto’s Indian Catholic ancestors who were exiled there from Goa, as well as his family’s longstanding ties to the church. The tiger is an important symbol in southern Indian culture. It also commemorates the struggles of the Mangalorean Catholics in the late 18th century against Tipu Sultan of Mysore, whose nickname was the “Tiger of Mysore”. The red shells are taken from a coat of arms long associated with the Dumaresq family of the island of Jersey, from whom Mr. Pinto descends through the maternal line. The combination of white and red alludes to the arms of the Carteret family, another Jersey family from whom Mr. Pinto is descended. |
