Symbolism

The Canadian Heraldic Authority does not have confirmed symbolism for this emblem. The following comments are hypotheses only. The maple leaf is a symbol of Canada, to where Mr. Samuel’s father and uncle immigrated in the 1850s. The roses possibly refer to England, the country of Mr. Samuel’s ancestors and of the family of his wife, Leah Mandelson. The yellow shield with the blue chevron is possibly based on the arms used by General James Wolfe, a figure from Canadian history about whom Mr. Samuel had an abiding interest.

This Latin phrase means “Honour feeds the arts.” Mr. Samuel was a philanthropist and patron of the arts, closely associated with the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.
