Symbolism

The ship, an ancient symbol of the Church, symbolizes the reconciliation of churches through Bishop Myers’ work in various expressions of the ecumenical movement, including the Canadian Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches, which both have a ship as their emblem. A ship also features in the arms of Quebec City, the episcopal see of the Anglican Diocese of Quebec, which he serves as its thirteenth bishop. It also honours the numerous boat trips Bishop Myers took while he was incumbent of the parish of the Magdalen Islands. The chi rho, another ancient Christian symbol, is engraved on his episcopal ring. The wavy bands recall water and his ministry in maritime locations. They also allude to radio waves and to Bishop Myers’ previous career as a broadcast journalist. The green symbolizes hope, and it is also an official colour of Ontario, his birthplace. The vertical division line alludes to Ontario and Quebec, the two provinces with which he has a strong connection.
