Blazon

Per pale Or and Azure, dexter a pall wavy Azure, in chief a patriarchal cross double flory Gules, sinister a sun in splendour Or inscribed IHS in letters Sable between in chief a trefoil and a rose and in base a fleur-de-lis Argent;

Symbolism

The left side represents Archbishop Prendergast’s service in the archdioceses of Halifax and of Ottawa. The Y-shape refers to the confluence of the Ottawa, Rideau and Gatineau rivers, whereas the cross is that found in the emblem of the Archdiocese of Halifax: it is a “flowering cross”, emphasizing salvation brought through the cross. The right side is blue, the colour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the sunburst with the sacred monogram (the first letters of the name Jesus in Greek) is used as an emblem of the Society of Jesus, identifying Archbishop Prendergast as a Jesuit. The shamrock and rose reflect his Irish and English background and the fleur-de-lis his upbringing in Montreal.
