Blazon

Vert a birch tree eradicated suspended therefrom an escutcheon Argent bearing a cross Gules;

Symbolism

The green colour represents Dr. Good’s birth province of Ontario and Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, his undergraduate university. The birch tree is an example of Canadian flora, the bark of which can be used for canoes and for inscription, serving respectively as references to one of his recreational pastimes and to his current profession as a history professor. The small shield holds the arms attributed to St. George in England. This serves as an allusion to his ancestry, his faith, and the subject of his doctoral thesis.

Crest

Blazon

A demi-black bear proper holding in its dexter paw a sword Argent hilt and pommel Or;

Symbolism

The black bear alludes to Ontario and the mascot of Dr. Good’s secondary school, Trinity College School, Port Hope. The sword refers to the spiritus gladius of St. Paul and to the Clan MacRae, as several armigers of Clan MacRae have a white sword with a gold hilt and pommel in their crests. For Dr. Good, it honours his great-grandmother, “Queenie” MacRae.

Motto

Blazon

ΑΓΩΝΙΖΟΥ ΤΟΝ ΚΑΛΟΝ ΑΓΩΝΑ;

Symbolism

This Greek sentence means “Fight the good fight.”
