The shield represents weather to symbolize Mr. Reid’s career as a prominent atmospheric scientist and as the former President of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society.

The tree represents Mr. Reid’s interest in family history and genealogical studies and his service in this field as a writer, researcher and as President of the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa. The maple and oak leaves symbolize both Canada and his native country, England, and the unending stories of a family line. The reeds are a pun on Mr. Reid’s surname.
