Dany Laferrière is one of the leading figures in French-Canadian literature. He made
a name for himself with his first novel, and his works have been translated into
some 15 languages. Proud of his Haitian roots, he explores such universal themes
as integration and multiculturalism. A keen observer of daily life, he also wrote the
screenplay adaptations for three of his novels, which were made into films. The recipient
of numerous national and international awards and honours, he is the first Canadian
elected to the prestigious Académie française.
