      A renowned economics scholar and teacher, he is the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University, where he founded the Institute for the Study of Economic Policy. He has gained widespread recognition as chair of the Council of Ontario Universities and, outside academia, as Director of economics research for the Royal Commission on the Economic Union and Development Prospects for Canada.

      He is a successful restaurateur and caterer, whose ready smile and well-worn apron have become fixtures at charitable fund-raising events in Ottawa. Never known to turn down a legitimate request, over the years he has supported a host of organizations from the Heart Institute to the Union Mission to substance abuse treatment centres to a recreation centre for Native youth in Davis Inlet. His dynamism and energy continue to vitalize all who meet him.
