As the first executive director of the Conservation Council of Ontario and the National and Provincial Parks Association of Canada, the latter of which he was also a principal founding member, he has made a major contribution to natural resource management and has greatly influenced government policy in this area. His leadership saved Quetico Park from large-scale commercial logging and prevented massive resort development at Lake Louise. Thanks to his efforts, ten new national parks were created, two of which, Nahanni and Kluane, were later declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
