Mitchell Sharp has served his country with distinction in many capacities. Having entered government service in 1942, he rose in fifteen years to Deputy Minister of Trade and Commerce. He was elected to Parliament and served as Minister of Trade and Commerce and then of Finance; as Secretary of State for External Affairs; and as President of the Privy Council. More recently he has been commissioner of the Northern Pipeline Agency and co-chairman of the Task Force on Conflict of Interest.

Continuing to serve his country with distinction, he has, since 1993, acted as Personal Advisor to the Prime Minister of Canada. In his memoirs, Which Reminds Me, he reflects on the nature of public service and policy over his forty-five-year career in government and brings the circumstances and characters of Canada's history to life. He contributes as well to international policy development through his involvement in such organizations as the Canadian Foundation for the Americas and the North-South Institute.
