A Newfoundlander and lifelong seafarer, he played a major role in eradicating tuberculosis amongst the isolated inhabitants of coastal Newfoundland as Master of the MV "Christmas Seal", a floating medical laboratory and x-ray unit which operated for some twenty years. First President of the Canadian Marine Rescue Auxiliary, he recently retired as Master of the ferry "Green Bay Transport."
