Richard Weisel is a giant in cardiovascular surgery research. Through his seminal work on protecting the heart during surgery, cardiac regeneration and stem cell therapy, this academic cardiovascular surgeon and University of Toronto professor emeritus improved quality of care and outcomes for heart disease patients. Notably, he was instrumental in developing the university’s Surgeon-Scientist Program, which has trained generations of academic specialists. A long-serving editor and board member of leading journals, he has maintained global influence on the field through his prolific publications and speaking engagements.
