Late in the afternoon of June 14, 1986, Douglas Grant Campbell, who was sixteen at the time, save a friend from drowning in the Grand River in western P.E.I. The two had set out onto the river in a four-metre dory powered by an outboard motor. It was a windy day and the tide was going out, leaving the water choppy. A large wave were tipped the dory and threw them into the river. When Douglas Campbell came to the surface he saw the empty dory running in circles and his friend, a non-swimmer, struggling against the waves some distance away. He swam to him and tried to support him from behind, but the victim panicked, forcing his rescuers underwater. Mr. Campbell removed his boots and lumber jacket, grabbed his semi-conscious friend and started to swim towards shore some 150 metres away. When he stopped to rest the victim panicked again and again drove him beneath the surface. By this time they had struggled into shallower water and several people who had witnessed the incident from shore were able to come to their aid.
