On behalf of Governor General Mary Simon, the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, C.P., Deputy of the Governor General and Chief Justice of Canada, joined Canadians at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony, standing together in reflection and gratitude.
He was joined by this year’s National Silver Cross Mother, Mrs. Nancy Payne, of Lansdowne, Ontario.
Mrs. Payne placed a wreath on behalf of all Canadian mothers who have lost a child in military service to Canada.
A testament to love and loss, the National Silver Cross Mother embodies the strength and resilience of Canadian mothers of children who have made sacrifices for peace and freedom.
Rideau Hall welcomed Mrs. Nancy Payne, who courageously accepted to serve as this year’s National Silver Cross Mother. Mrs. Payne lost her son, Corporal Randy Joseph Payne, in Afghanistan in 2006, while he served as a member of the close protection team.
About the National Silver Cross Mother
The National Silver Cross Mother is chosen annually from nominations submitted to The Royal Canadian Legion and represents all Canadian mothers who have lost a child in military service to Canada.
