National Commemorative Ceremony for the Honourable Murray Sinclair

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Whit Fraser attended the National Commemorative Ceremony to mark the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Governor General joined Indigenous leaders, dignitaries and the public for the memorial service.

Her Excellency delivered remarks at the service to recognize Mr. Sinclair’s immense contributions to Canada.

As Head Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, he leaves behind an invaluable legacy of bringing to light the stories of thousands of Residential Schools Survivors.

Anishinaabe and a member of the Peguis First Nation, Senator Sinclair was the first Indigenous judge appointed in Manitoba and the second appointed in Canada.

He was appointed Companion of the Order of Canada, on September 24, 2021.
