Launch of heart garden at Rideau Hall

June 21, 2024

To mark National Indigenous People’s Day, Governor General Mary Simon took part in an art activity with schoolchildren to launch the Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams heart garden at Rideau Hall.

The heart garden honours First Nations, Inuit and Métis children affected by residential schools, both those who survived and those who never came home. Each heart represents our shared responsibility to remember their stories and commit to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.

Visitors to Rideau Hall will have the opportunity to add hearts to the garden throughout the summer, and to reflect on the comments on the hearts of other visitors.

Governor General Mary Simon is surrounded by young students who are placing their cardboard hearts in the garden.
