150th commemoration of Treaty 6

August 23, 2026

Today, Governor General Arbour joined Elders, knowledge keepers, First Nations leaders and community members to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6 in Fort Carlton, Saskatchewan. The original Treaty 6 parchment was also displayed, offering a tangible connection to our shared history.

This significant occasion offered an opportunity for reflection, learning and coming together in the spirit and intent of Treaty 6, while recognizing the progress that has been made and acknowledging the important work that still lies ahead.

As we mark this milestone, we reaffirm our shared commitment to reconciliation and to building stronger relationships rooted in mutual respect, understanding and partnership.

Despite the shortcomings of the past, we have an opportunity to rebuild that trust
and ensure a future that is both harmonious and prosperous for our children and grandchildren.

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Louise Arbour, Governor General of Canada
