A Golden Milestone: 50th Anniversary of the Order of Canada
November 17, 2015
The countdown has started to 2017, the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada and the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Order of Canada. This milestone is a golden opportunity to inspire the nation by showcasing diverse and compelling examples of excellence drawn from within the membership of the Order.
To that end, the Governor General has assembled an executive committee to shepherd our celebrations and mobilize partnerships in support of this goal. We are pleased to introduce you to the individuals who have been diligently working on your behalf: Dr. Calvin Stiller, O.C., O.Ont. (Chair); Dr. Michael Bliss, O.C.; Mr. Raymond Chrétien, O.C.; Mr. Elmer Hildebrand, C.M., O.M.; Mr. Allison McCain, C.M.; Mr. Stuart McLean, O.C.; and Ms. Shelagh Rogers, O.C.
One of the key initiatives is a hardcover book that features profiles of 50 members of the Order of Canada. Over this past spring and summer, the committee convened to select subjects for the book, as well as a writer, publisher and additional content.
The Chancellery is thrilled to report that we are now moving into the implementation phase of this project. The book will be available for purchase by the public in early 2017 and will be given free of charge to every living member of the Order, as well as donated to every high school and library system in the country.
Selecting 50 members of the Order of Canada to profile from a total membership of over 6 500 recipients was no mean feat! Over four months, the committee held several discussions to establish an initial short list before ranking, debating and narrowing the list down to arrive at a final group of subjects.
We invite you to stay tuned for more updates as the excitement builds towards this landmark occasion!
