Smart and Caring

Smart and Caring

When David Johnston became the 28th governor general of Canada on October 1, 2010, he called upon all Canadians to join in the building of a smarter, more caring nation.

The paths to a smart and caring nation can be summed up in two Latin words featured in the Governor General’s coat of arms: Contemplare Meliora—to envision a better world. A smart nation learns from the past, embraces the future and looks to the world with confidence and respect, while a caring nation recognizes that the measure of any society’s success lies in its ability to help others, particularly the vulnerable and marginalized among us.

Alongside his wife, Sharon, His Excellency sought to reinforce learning and innovation, encourage philanthropy and volunteerism, and support families and children.
